Is SEO dead?

No. SEO is not dead; it has changed, which is a very different thing. People have predicted the death of SEO for over a decade, through every major Google update and now the rise of AI search. Each time, SEO adapted and remained one of the highest-return marketing channels available.

What is true is that how people search is shifting. AI Overviews, ChatGPT and other tools now answer many questions directly. But that does not remove the need to be found and trusted; it changes where and how. Businesses that treat SEO as dead will simply be invisible, both in classic results and in the AI answers built on top of them.

What has changed about SEO?

Several things at once. Search results are richer, with featured snippets, local packs and AI Overviews taking space above the classic links. Content standards have risen: thin, generic pages no longer rank. And a new layer has appeared, optimising to be cited by AI, known as AEO and GEO.

The fundamentals, however, are remarkably stable: a fast, well-structured, crawlable site; genuinely useful content that answers real questions; and authority earned through trust and links. If anything, these matter more now, because they are exactly what both Google and the AI systems rely on to decide who to show and cite.

How have AI Overviews affected SEO?

AI Overviews answer some queries directly at the top of the page, which can reduce clicks for purely informational searches. That is the basis for the "SEO is dead" headlines. But the picture is more nuanced.

First, AI Overviews are built from web content, so being the source they draw on is now a goal in itself. Second, commercial and local searches, where people are choosing a supplier, still send plenty of clicks, and that is where most business value sits. Our guide on ranking in AI Overviews explains how to appear in and benefit from them, rather than being replaced by them.

Why does SEO matter more, not less?

Because visibility is now contested across more surfaces, not fewer. You need to be found in classic results, in local packs, and increasingly inside AI answers, and all three are won with the same foundations: trustworthy, well-structured, authoritative content on a technically sound site.

Organic search also remains one of the few channels where traffic compounds and does not stop when you switch off a budget, unlike paid ads. In an era where AI makes content cheap and abundant, genuine expertise, clarity and trust stand out more, not less. That is precisely what good SEO builds and what earns both rankings and citations.

What should businesses do now?

Double down on the fundamentals and add the AI layer, rather than abandoning SEO. In practice that means:

  • Keep your site fast, structured and easy to crawl
  • Publish genuinely useful content that answers real questions clearly
  • Build authority and consistent brand signals across the web
  • Add structured data so machines understand your pages
  • Track visibility in AI answers alongside classic rankings

The businesses that thrive treat search as one connected discipline, classic SEO plus AEO and GEO, rather than betting everything on one channel or writing SEO off entirely. Our explainer on what SEO is covers the basics for anyone starting out.

How do you future-proof your SEO?

You cannot predict every algorithm or AI change, but you can build so that changes help rather than hurt you. The through-line across every update, past and future, is the same: be genuinely useful, trustworthy and easy for machines to understand.

Focus on real expertise and clear answers, earn authority honestly, keep your technical foundations strong, and measure outcomes, enquiries and revenue, not vanity metrics. Do that and you are aligned with where search is going, whatever form it takes. That is the opposite of a dead channel; it is one that keeps rewarding quality as everything else gets noisier.
